Primary School’s Sports Funding

What is the Sports Premium?
The government is providing funding of 150 million per annum to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school Head Teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Each school will receive £8000 plus an extra £5 per pupil each year for the next two years. This money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of the funding
Schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport in general, but they do have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Our funding has helped to enhance our provision by contributing to the cost of the following:

• Simon Carson Sports to provide weekly PE sessions and gymnastics club
• Extra Football in a lunchtime club
• Transport to sports fixtures
• Swimming Tuition
• PSHCE book of playtime games to encourage co-operative play

The impact of our sports funding 2015/16 was

• Children took part in a range of activities supporting the PE curriculum including a large number of inter school competitions eg: football, netball, cross country, gymnastics. There is a greater sense of team work and pride in their performances and attitude, the children enjoy representing their school at local events.

• Football Club was well attended but was unable to continue due to staff commitments.

• Our children have been able to attend more of the fixtures without having to rely on parents to transport with the possibility of events needing to be cancelled if volunteers can’t be found. Many parents now attend voluntarily as part of our support network.

• We have provided swimming tuition for the whole school R-Y6 (32) rather than targeting Y3/4 swimming (11) as for many of our children these are the only regular swimming sessions they attend. 100% of our children have improved their confidence and ability.

• The book of PSHE games has been successfully used at lunchtimes to encourage children to play more games rather than the same ones. Flash points for problems have been identified and game rules written by the children.

St. Hedda’s School sports funding 16/17 will be £8167.

• We will continue to fund our additional swimming, 27 pupils rather than 13.

• Maintain the level of transport funding.

• Improve the selection of sports and activities offered by
Simon Carson Sports
Sample sessions of Forest Schools
Active club sessions

• Make even better use of the Whitby Area Sports package that we buy

• School staff will be invited to contribute to our ‘Everyone Active more often’ agenda.
